Japanese Diet Information

Seaweed

Seaweed, or nori in Japanese is one of the most important ingredients in the Japanese diet. Most dishes contain at least one type of seaweed.

Nori is sold in dry sheets and is the seaweed that is used in making sushi and onigiri, or Japanese rice balls.

There are several different kinds of seaweed, including: arame, hijiki, kombu and wakame.

Seaweed has a number of health benefits, but naturally it is high in sodium. People on a controlled sodium diet should be careful with how much seaweed they eat.
